Our History
Habitat for Humanity of Lake County was founded in October of 1989 by members of New Life Presbyterian Church. Our first home was completed just five months later, in March 1990.
In 2007, Habitat for Humanity of Lake County merged with Habitat for Humanity of Sumter County, strengthening our capacity to deliver affordable housing solutions across both counties and streamline administrative operations.
In pursuit of our mission to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope, Habitat Lake-Sumter leads through innovative development strategies and effective advocacy – to inspire a more stable and sustainable future for every individual and family in our community.
While we share the same mission, vision, and values of Habitat for Humanity, nationwide and around the globe, Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (EIN number 59-2958036), operating throughout Lake and Sumter Counties. As a local non-profit and housing experts, it is our goal to provide access and opportunity to affordable housing solutions and build a better Lake and Sumter.
Habitat for Humanity International was founded with Christian roots in 1976, however,Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter does not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.
